What is Wonster Words?
The award-winning app that turns learning to read into the game kids ask for.
Wonster Words teaches reading the way the research says children learn it (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and spelling) and hides that structure inside games. Built by 77Sparx Studio with educators and speech-language pathologists, it is loved by kids ages 2–8 and the parents who hear them sounding out words at the dinner table.
- What it is: a science-of-reading app where phonics, spelling, and vocabulary play like games: word building, word searches, and animated word stories with googly-eyed letter characters.
- Who it is for: children ages 2–8 learning to read, and the parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists helping them.
- What makes it different: expert-built content underneath, genuine fun on the surface: every game targets a real early-reading skill, and every finished word unlocks an animation that makes its meaning stick.
- Safe by design: ad-free, works offline, never markets to children, with parent-directed features behind a parent gate.

The learning approach
Wonster Words is grounded in the science of reading, the decades of research on how children learn to read. It starts with the sounds of language and the letters that spell them, then adds the vocabulary that turns sounding out words into reading for meaning. The app follows that order deliberately, so each skill rests on the one before it.
- Phonemic awareness: hearing and playing with the individual sounds in words.
- Phonics: matching sounds to letters and blending them into words, from CVC words through digraphs, blends, vowel teams, and silent-e patterns.
- Sight words & vocabulary: growing the words a child recognizes, knows, and understands, with every finished word unlocking an animation that shows what it means.
- Spelling: turning sounds back into written words, aligned with the patterns taught from kindergarten through 2nd grade.
- Speech and language: practice that supports how children say and use words, shaped by the speech-language pathologists on the team.
You can browse the same sequence in our spelling resources and phonics resources, and how it works explains the full approach.

App Store and Google Play reviews
These are a few of the reviews parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists have left on the App Store and Google Play. We have lightly edited the quotes for length.
She chooses it over TV
“My 3-year-old will actively choose to play this rather than watch TV now. She loves making the words and then getting to see the little cartoons. It has made a huge difference in a short time.”
Great language building app
“As a Speech-Language Pathologist I find Wonster Words highly effective in teaching letter sounds and recognition. The repetitive sounds and quirky intonations are sure to engage all learners.”
Each of my students loves this app
“Lots of fun and very engaging. I have been using it for remote learning and in-person tutoring. Each of my students loves this app.”
It makes me want to cry with joy
“My son is a non-verbal autistic child and this app actually gets him to do his letter sounds, and he tries to make word sounds. It makes me want to cry with joy.”
The reviews page has every review, grouped by topic: phonics, spelling, speech and language, learning needs, and more.

Store screenshots at source resolution
These are the same nine panels at their 1242×2688 source resolution, for print or a large header image. They are store creative, not unedited device captures. For unedited frames from the app, use the gameplay stills.

These are unedited stills from in-app recordings of the learning mini-games, at 1920×886 landscape. Each file is named for the skill on screen.
Story stills
Each word animation has two stills: the googly-eyed letters building the word, then the scene the finished word unlocks. The nine words have nine different settings. We cropped the black side bars from a few frames, so some are narrower than 1920 px.
